I went to Iraq first in 2001, taking in humanitarian supplies in defiance of the sanctions which the UN had reported were causing 5000 child deaths per month. I went back in February 2003, and was there for the month before the UK-US invasion and the first 12 days of the war, before being expelled by what remained of the Iraqi government. I returned in November 2003 for six months, writing, trying to set up solidarity links and running a small circus which worked with traumatised children.
I also presented the documentary A Letter to the Prime Minister, directed by Julia Guest (Year Zero Films, 2005) which won the Al Jazeera Best Foreign Documentary award.
My reports from Fallujah were translated into several languages and also included in John Pilger's anthology Tell Me No Lies - Investigative Journalism and its Triumphs (Penguin, 2004).
